Kimi Antonelli Makes Formula 1 History as Youngest-Ever World Champion at 20

Posted : 02 November 2026

Kimi Antonelli has made Formula 1 history by becoming the youngest world champion in the sport’s history after securing the 2026 drivers’ title at the Mexican Grand Prix.

The 20-year-old Mercedes driver clinched the championship with a third-place finish in Mexico City, achieving the milestone with four races remaining in the season. His result gave him an unassailable advantage over his closest challengers and ended a 73-year wait for an Italian drivers’ champion since Alberto Ascari won the title in 1953.

Antonelli finished behind race winner Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, but his podium position was enough to confirm his place in Formula 1 history. At 20 years and 68 days, he comfortably surpassed Sebastian Vettel’s previous record of 23 years and 133 days, set when the German won his first championship in 2010.

The young Italian has enjoyed an outstanding second season in Formula 1 after making his debut in 2025 at just 18. Although Mercedes provided a highly competitive car, Antonelli's performances throughout the campaign established him as the leading driver in the championship battle, outperforming experienced teammate George Russell.

His impressive start to the season included five victories in the opening six races. He continued to demonstrate remarkable consistency, collecting further wins and podium finishes to build a commanding advantage in the standings.

One of his most memorable performances came at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, where he recovered from 19th on the starting grid to claim victory at his home race. The drive highlighted his ability to combine speed, confidence and composure under pressure.

Antonelli's journey to Formula 1 began in karting at the age of seven. His father, Marco, a former racing driver and team principal, played an important role in developing his talent, despite initially having reservations about the financial and personal challenges associated with professional motorsport.

His potential attracted the attention of Mercedes' junior driver programme when he was just 11. He subsequently progressed through the junior categories, winning Italian and German Formula 4 championships in 2022 before claiming the Formula Regional European title in 2023.

Rather than following the traditional route through Formula 3, Antonelli moved directly into Formula 2 in 2024. He finished sixth in the championship before Mercedes promoted him to its senior team following Hamilton's departure to Ferrari.

His rookie Formula 1 season included several difficult moments, but he still managed three podium finishes and ended the campaign seventh in the drivers' standings. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had previously stressed that the teenager needed time to adjust to the pressure, media attention and expectations that came with competing at the highest level.

That patience has been rewarded with a remarkable championship-winning campaign.

Antonelli's personality has also made him a popular figure in the paddock. Known for his cheerful attitude, humour and practical jokes, he has developed positive relationships with fellow drivers and members of the Mercedes team.

His title triumph has also drawn praise from Hamilton, who previously served as a mentor during Antonelli's development within the Mercedes programme. The seven-time champion congratulated his successor after the Mexican Grand Prix, as the young Italian celebrated an achievement that could mark the beginning of a successful career.
