Kimi Antonelli Leads Mercedes One-Two in Final Monaco Grand Prix Practice

Posted : 06 June 2026

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli delivered a strong response to recent struggles by setting the fastest time in final practice for the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday, putting Mercedes ahead of Ferrari ahead of qualifying.

The 19-year-old Italian, who had looked off the pace earlier in the weekend and endured a difficult outing at Monaco last year, produced a best lap of 1:12.720. That effort placed him 0.327 seconds clear of home favourite Charles Leclerc, who finished second for Ferrari.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton narrowly missed out on second place, finishing just 0.004 seconds behind his Ferrari teammate in third. Despite his strong showing, he was unable to replicate the pace that saw him top Friday’s sessions.

Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate George Russell finished fourth, around seven-tenths adrift, ahead of reigning world champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.

Behind the leading group, Oscar Piastri placed sixth for McLaren, followed by Audi rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, and McLaren’s Lando Norris. Nico Hülkenberg completed the top ten in the second Audi.

The session ran in dry and sunny conditions but ended under a late red flag after Oliver Bearman crashed his Haas car near Casino Square. The British driver was unhurt in the incident.

Antonelli’s performance continues an impressive run of form, with the teenager having won four consecutive races and now targeting a historic fifth straight victory, a feat not achieved by an Italian driver since Alberto Ascari in 1952.
