Kimi Antonelli Extends Championship Lead with Resilient Hungarian Grand Prix Podium

Kimi Antonelli praised Mercedes for delivering a strong recovery drive after finishing third at the Hungarian Grand Prix, a result that allowed him to increase his lead in the Formula One world championship despite a difficult weekend.

The 19-year-old Italian started from seventh on the grid after receiving a qualifying penalty for a yellow flag infringement. However, he produced an impressive performance, navigating different tyre strategies to climb onto the podium behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Antonelli described the podium finish as valuable damage limitation following Saturday's setback. He admitted Mercedes had lacked pace throughout the weekend, while rivals McLaren and Ferrari benefited from recent upgrades that made them more competitive.

Despite those challenges, Antonelli was pleased with the outcome and credited the team for maximizing the result. The six-time race winner this season extended his championship advantage over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by five points to 50, while also moving 59 points clear of teammate George Russell.

Looking ahead, Antonelli expressed hope that Mercedes would introduce performance upgrades after the summer break to match the progress shown by their rivals. He believes the title fight will become even more competitive during the second half of the season.

The championship leader expects McLaren to remain a major threat after its recent improvements, while Ferrari continues to show strong pace. He also warned against underestimating four-time world champion Max Verstappen and backed Russell to return to form.

Antonelli emphasized that Mercedes must continue improving if they want to remain at the front, saying the team needs to raise its performance level for what promises to be a closely contested championship battle.

Russell endured another frustrating race after a technical issue ruined his start. An anti-stall system problem dropped him from the grid to the back of the field, forcing him to recover from 20th place to finish seventh.

The British driver admitted the setback was another disappointment in a season filled with misfortune but insisted he remains optimistic. Russell said many of the problems have been beyond his control and stressed the importance of staying focused rather than dwelling on setbacks.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff accepted responsibility for Russell's difficult start, describing the error as unacceptable. He acknowledged the team had once again compromised Russell's race before the opening lap and admitted Mercedes must improve its execution going forward.
