Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli produced another outstanding qualifying performance to secure pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix, extending his impressive form in the 2026 Formula One season. The championship leader outpaced Red Bull's Max Verstappen by more than three-tenths of a second at Spa-Francorchamps, while teammate and closest title challenger George Russell could only manage fourth after finishing over half a second slower.
Antonelli, who has now claimed six pole positions in the opening 10 races of the campaign, overcame difficult conditions after struggling with changing wind levels during the early stages of qualifying. The Italian found significant pace in the decisive Q3 session after making setup adjustments and dedicated the achievement to his father Marco, who celebrated his 61st birthday on Saturday.
Verstappen secured a front-row start after benefiting from a strategic slipstream provided by teammate Isack Hadjar during the final qualifying runs. The reigning world champion admitted the tow was worth around three-tenths of a second and praised Red Bull's teamwork, while Hadjar accepted his own 30-place grid penalty after exceeding the permitted number of engine components.
Lando Norris qualified among the fastest drivers but will start well down the grid after receiving a 10-place penalty for exceeding his power unit allocation. Despite abandoning his final flying lap, the McLaren driver was encouraged by the car's unexpected pace at Spa and remains optimistic that overtaking opportunities during the race will allow him to fight back through the field.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and sixth respectively after failing to improve on their final attempts in Q3. Leclerc had briefly challenged Antonelli's benchmark earlier in the session, but Ferrari could not match Mercedes' pace when it mattered most.
Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad also impressed by qualifying ahead of several established competitors despite driving the team's upgraded package that was unavailable on the second car. Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten, while Fernando Alonso will also take a substantial grid penalty after exceeding his engine component allocation.
With Mercedes continuing its remarkable qualifying dominance and Antonelli strengthening his championship credentials, the Belgian Grand Prix is set up for another crucial chapter in the battle for the 2026 Formula One world title.
