Jorge Martin has been forced out of the remaining pre-season testing in Malaysia following a heavy crash at the Sepang circuit. The reigning MotoGP world champion suffered fractures in his right hand and left foot after being thrown off his Aprilia bike at Turn Two.
Earlier in the day, he had walked away unharmed from a separate crash, but this second incident has left him requiring surgery. Martin will now return to Europe for medical treatment as he races against time to recover before the season opener in Thailand on March 2.
The severity of the crash has left Aprilia Racing baffled, with team principal Massimo Rivola stating that Martin made no apparent mistake before losing control of the bike. The incident occurred after Martin had completed 13 laps, launching him into the air before he landed hard on his left foot and hit his head on the asphalt.
Meanwhile, Trackhouse team rider Raul Fernandez also suffered injuries, ruling him out of the remaining test days. Despite the setbacks for some riders, Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo topped the opening day’s timesheets with a lap time of 1:57.555.
Quartararo dominated much of the session, securing the fastest time on his 50th lap, while six-time world champion Marc Marquez placed second on his Ducati with a time of 1:57.606. His brother, Alex Marquez, followed closely in third with a time of 1:57.738. With Martin’s condition uncertain, attention now shifts to whether he can recover in time to begin his title defense when the MotoGP season kicks off in Thailand.
