Jorge Martin produced a dramatic late overtake on championship leader Marco Bezzecchi to claim victory at the French MotoGP on Sunday, while Ai Ogura made history by securing Japan’s first premier-class podium finish in 14 years.
Bezzecchi appeared set to continue his impressive start to the season with a fourth victory in just five races. However, the Italian rider lost the lead on the penultimate lap when Martin launched a decisive move to take control of the race.
The reigning world champion held on through the final lap to secure his first Grand Prix victory of the season. Martin celebrated emotionally after crossing the finish line, standing upright on his bike in triumph following a crucial result that tightened the championship battle.
The Spaniard’s victory also reduced the gap to his Aprilia teammate Bezzecchi to just one point in the standings. Martin had already gained momentum over the weekend after winning Saturday’s sprint race to collect valuable additional points.
Bezzecchi admitted after the race that he struggled with pace during the contest but remained satisfied to finish second and maintain his place at the top of the championship standings.
The race also marked a memorable moment for Ai Ogura, who finished third to claim the first MotoGP podium by a Japanese rider since Katsuyuki Nakasuga achieved the feat at Valencia in 2012.
Ogura’s breakthrough result was the first podium finish of his MotoGP career and lifted the 25-year-old Trackhouse rider to fifth place in the riders’ championship standings after an impressive and determined performance throughout the race.
