Hungarian Grand Prix Opens with Crucial Practice Ahead of Summer Break

Formula 1 heads to the Hungaroring in Budapest this weekend for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, the final race before the championship pauses for its mandatory summer break. Friday's programme features the opening two free practice sessions as teams begin work on car setup ahead of qualifying and Sunday's race.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli arrives in Hungary full of confidence after securing his sixth victory of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver extended his advantage at the top of the standings after teammate George Russell retired following a first-lap collision at Spa.

Mercedes will be aiming to maintain its strong form, but Ferrari is expected to pose a significant challenge on the Hungaroring's slow and technical layout. The circuit places greater emphasis on downforce, tyre management and qualifying pace than outright engine performance, making it one of the most demanding tracks on the Formula 1 calendar.

Eight-time Hungarian Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton returns to one of his most successful venues as he and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc look to build on the Scuderia's recent improvements. Ferrari's strong cornering performance is expected to suit the Hungaroring, often described as "Monaco without walls" because of its narrow layout and limited overtaking opportunities.

McLaren also arrives with confidence after last year's victory by Lando Norris at the circuit. The team has introduced upgrades aimed at improving low-speed performance for Norris and Oscar Piastri, while Aston Martin will debut a major aerodynamic package designed by Adrian Newey as it seeks to improve its competitiveness.

Red Bull Racing hopes the Hungaroring's characteristics will suit its chassis after Max Verstappen finished on the podium in Belgium. The Milton Keynes team remains firmly in the hunt as the championship battle approaches its halfway point.

Friday's action begins with Free Practice 1 at 1:30 p.m. local time, followed by Free Practice 2 at 5:00 p.m. Teams will use both sessions to evaluate tyre performance, aerodynamic balance and race pace before final practice and qualifying on Saturday.

Weather conditions are expected to remain warm and dry throughout Friday and Saturday, providing ideal conditions for setup work. However, temperatures are forecast to rise further on race day, placing greater importance on tyre management over the 70-lap Grand Prix.

Qualifying has traditionally played a decisive role at the Hungaroring due to the circuit's limited overtaking opportunities. Securing a strong grid position could prove vital as drivers look to head into the summer break with valuable championship points.
