Hocevar Claims Brickyard 400 Pole as Blaney and Gilliland Battle for $1 Million Prize

Carson Hocevar will lead the field to the green flag for Sunday's Brickyard 400 after producing the fastest lap in qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Spire Motorsports driver posted a time of 48.232 seconds around the iconic 2.5-mile oval to secure pole position ahead of Daniel Suarez and Tyler Reddick.

Daniel Suarez qualified second with a lap of 48.288 seconds, while Tyler Reddick completed the top three. Ty Gibbs and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five, with Michael McDowell, Corey Heim, Alex Bowman, AJ Allmendinger and Kyle Larson completing the top 10. Chase Elliott brushed the wall during his qualifying run but still managed to qualify 27th for the crown jewel event.

The Brickyard 400 also marks the conclusion of NASCAR's 2026 In-Season Challenge, a five-race knockout tournament featuring 32 Cup Series drivers. After four rounds of competition, Team Penske's Ryan Blaney and Front Row Motorsports driver Todd Gilliland remain in contention for the $1 million winner's prize.

Blaney, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, reached the Champions Round after winning at EchoPark Speedway and eliminating Christopher Bell in the semifinals. Gilliland has emerged as the tournament's surprise package after entering as the No. 25 seed and defeating several higher-ranked drivers, including Chase Elliott, to earn his place in the final.

Although Gilliland qualified only 36th for Sunday's race, his recent performances at Indianapolis provide encouragement. The Front Row Motorsports driver has recorded sixth-place finishes in both of his previous Brickyard 400 starts and will hope to continue his remarkable run against Blaney, who has averaged a fifth-place finish in the Next Gen era at the historic circuit.

Attention will also focus on Tyler Reddick, who qualified third as he attempts to revive his championship challenge. The 23XI Racing driver enjoyed a strong opening half of the season before a difficult run of results saw his points advantage disappear. A strong performance at Indianapolis could reignite his title hopes with only five races remaining before the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Denny Hamlin, who starts fifth, is widely considered one of the favourites for victory after extending his championship lead in recent weeks. Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney and Ty Gibbs are also expected to challenge for honours in one of NASCAR's most prestigious events.

With the Brickyard 400 carrying both playoff significance and the conclusion of the In-Season Challenge, Sunday's race promises high stakes as drivers battle for victory at one of motorsport's most famous venues.
