Historic Mercedes "Streamliner" W196 R Breaks Auction Record at £42.75 Million

Posted : 04 February 2025

A historic Mercedes "streamliner," the W196 R Stromlinienwagen, has set a new record by selling for £42.75 million (€51.155 million) at auction. The car, previously driven by F1 legends Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio, was used by Fangio to win the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix. Moss also raced the car at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza the same year, setting a remarkable fastest lap at an average speed of 134mph, before retiring from the race.

The sale took place at the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, conducted by RM Sotheby's on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). The W196 R became the most expensive grand prix car ever sold, surpassing the previous record set by another Mercedes W196, which had been sold for £19.6 million in 2013. The car's hammer price reached €46.5 million, with the final sale price including the buyer's premium.

This makes the W196 R the second most valuable car sold at auction, just behind the 1955 Mercedes 300SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, which fetched a staggering €135 million (£113 million) in May 2022. IMS curator Jason Vansickle remarked on the car's beauty and historical significance but noted that it was beyond their typical scope for acquisition.
