Henk Lategan of South Africa strengthened his lead in the Dakar Rally standings after winning the eighth stage on Monday. The 30-year-old, who is in his fourth Dakar appearance, completed the 487km special between Al-Duwadimi and Riyadh in 4 hours, 51 minutes, and 54 seconds.
His victory extended his lead over Yazeed al-Rajhi to 5 minutes and 41 seconds in the overall standings. Despite a two-minute penalty for speeding, Lategan finished 1 minute and 47 seconds ahead of his Toyota teammate Guy Botterill.
Lategan recounted a challenging portion of the stage where many drivers got lost, particularly in a canyon. "We were a little bit nervous going into there because you see cars coming from all angles," he said.
However, Lategan managed to find his way out of the canyon and surged from around seventh position to first. He acknowledged some navigation errors and a puncture earlier in the day but expressed satisfaction with his performance.
France's Mathieu Serradori finished in third, preventing an all-South African podium by edging out Brian Baragwanath by just five seconds. Qatar's Nasser al-Attiyah, a five-time champion, completed the stage 12 minutes and 17 seconds behind Lategan and now sits fourth overall, trailing by 34 minutes and 14 seconds. Despite the tough day, al-Attiyah noted the challenges of navigation, especially when opening the stage, and expressed relief at finishing the stage.
In the bike category, Tosha Schareina of Spain claimed victory, closing the gap to Australian leader Daniel Sanders, who now holds an 11-minute lead. Schareina described the stage as tough, especially with the presence of dust, but was content with her progress. "I tried to push hard at the start and from the refueling point several of us rode together," she explained. The next stage, a 357km special from Riyadh to Haradh, is set to take place on Tuesday.
