Helmut Marko Backs Charles Leclerc to Break Mercedes Dominance at Monaco Grand Prix

Posted : 05 June 2026

The dominant run of the Mercedes team faces a major threat on the streets of Monte Carlo this weekend. Former Red Bull motorsport advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has officially tipped Ferrari star Charles Leclerc as the outright favorite to win his home race. Marko believes the unique layout of the street circuit will neutralize the straight-line speed advantage of the championship leaders.

Mercedes has completely dominated the opening phase of the campaign, winning every single Grand Prix so far. Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli currently leads the Drivers' Championship by 43 points over his veteran teammate George Russell. Leclerc sits in third place, a distant 56 points behind the teenage leader. Additionally, Mercedes commands a massive 72-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors' standings.

Despite this performance deficit, Marko insisted that the twisty layout of the Principality changes the competitive balance. The Austrian specified that the dominant championship leaders will face significant technical challenges in the slow, low-speed corners. He named the local driver as his definitive pick to secure the highly crucial pole position on Saturday. Marko firmly added that the competitor who qualifies at the front usually secures the race victory in Monte Carlo.

Leclerc enters his home race highly motivated following a frustrating weekend at the previous Canadian Grand Prix. The Monegasque racer recently signed a highly publicised long-term contract extension with the Scuderia. He noted that the team maintains an aggressive development mindset regarding aerodynamic and power unit upgrades. The Ferrari driver stated that the championship remains entirely open because of the radical technical regulations.

Marko concluded that internal friction remains the only other realistic threat to the dominant Mercedes team. He expressed hope that the intense title battle between Antonelli and Russell could cause an internal team implosion. However, the immediate focus remains on the iconic street circuit, where the Scuderia hopes to secure their first victory.
