Hamilton Leads Crash-Filled FP2 Ahead of Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Posted : 19 September 2025

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in Friday’s second free practice session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes teammate George Russell.

The session was disrupted by multiple incidents, including crashes and car damage for several drivers, but Hamilton showcased the pace that has made him a seven-time world champion.

Hamilton completed his best lap in 1:41.293, narrowly edging Leclerc by 0.074 seconds, while Russell was third, nearly half a second behind. Leclerc is targeting a fifth consecutive pole at the challenging Baku street circuit.

Behind them, Kimi Antonelli, Oliver Bearman, and four-time world champion Max Verstappen rounded out the top six, with Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Esteban Ocon also posting strong times.

The McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris endured a difficult afternoon. Norris, trailing Piastri by 31 points in the championship, crashed into the wall at Turn Four, damaging the rear suspension and missing most of the session.

Piastri later brushed the barrier at Turn 15 and locked up at Turn Two during long runs, ultimately recording the twelfth fastest time, two places behind Norris. McLaren will need significant improvements if they hope to secure a second consecutive constructors’ championship with seven races remaining.

For Hamilton, Friday’s performance was a confidence boost following a morning session incident where he hit the wall at Turn Five, damaging his front wing and picking up a puncture. He showed strong pace on both tyre compounds, suggesting he has regained momentum on a track where Leclerc has dominated qualifying in recent years. Notably, a victory on Sunday would mark Hamilton’s 106th career win and make him the first F1 driver to reach 5,000 career points.
