Hamilton Declares He Is ‘Built Differently’ as He Targets F1 Career Into His Mid-40s

Posted : 31 October 2026

Lewis Hamilton has declared that Formula 1 has never had a driver like him as he reaffirmed his commitment to competing at the highest level into his mid-40s.

The seven-time world champion made the statement ahead of the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix. He also dismissed concerns that ageing could affect his reaction time and ability to compete against younger drivers.

Hamilton, who joined Ferrari in 2025, is 41 and could be at least 45 when Formula 1 returns to Africa in the early 2030s. The championship has signed a 10-year agreement with Rwanda to host a Grand Prix, marking its first race on the African continent since 1993.

The British driver has campaigned for an African Grand Prix for several years. He has also expressed a desire to remain in the sport long enough to experience the historic return.

Speaking to reporters in Mexico City, Hamilton insisted that his physical condition and determination set him apart from previous generations.

"Firstly, you've never had anyone like me here in the 70 years, so I feel that I'm built differently," he said.

He also challenged the assumption that reaction times naturally decline with age. Hamilton pointed to his performance in the previous race as evidence that he can still match younger competitors.

"Did you see my reaction time in the last race? It was faster than some of the youngest people here," he added.

However, the Ferrari driver admitted that he could not guarantee he would still want to compete in four years. He maintained that his passion for racing and willingness to make sacrifices remain strong.

"I'm still all in, and I will be for the foreseeable future," Hamilton stated.

Despite his confidence, Hamilton made it clear that he would not continue racing if his performance declined significantly. He said he had no intention of staying in Formula 1 simply to extend his career.

The 2026 season has provided a positive response to critics who questioned his ability following a difficult debut campaign with Ferrari. Hamilton secured victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix in June, strengthening his position among the leading drivers.

His immediate objective is to finish second in the 2026 drivers' championship. Hamilton currently occupies third place with 241 points, just one behind Mercedes' George Russell, while Max Verstappen sits fourth with 236 points and Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc follows with 233.

Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli leads the championship with 365 points and is on course to secure his first world title. The 19-year-old is 21 years younger than Hamilton, highlighting the generational competition the Ferrari driver continues to face.

Hamilton's comments also bring attention to Fernando Alonso, who remains active in Formula 1 despite approaching his mid-40s. The Aston Martin driver turns 46 next summer and is expected to continue racing beyond the 2027 season.

For Hamilton, however, longevity will depend on maintaining his competitiveness rather than reaching a particular age. His ambition to race in Africa remains another motivation as Formula 1 prepares for its historic return to the continent.
