Hamilton Bids Emotional Farewell to Mercedes

Posted : 09 December 2024

Lewis Hamilton bid farewell to Mercedes in emotional fashion on Sunday after a remarkable recovery drive in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Starting from 16th position, the seven-time world champion finished an impressive fourth, passing his teammate George Russell on the final lap.

Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari next season at the age of 40, shared poignant words reflecting on his time with the team after the race, highlighting the significance of the moment. "When he said 'hammer time,' I realized it was the last time I’d hear that," an emotional Hamilton confessed.

The race itself was a tough challenge for Hamilton, who struggled initially but never lost hope. He acknowledged the difficulties during the first stint, especially compared to his future teammate, Charles Leclerc.

Despite the challenges, Hamilton kept pushing, and as he switched to different tires, his car came alive. "I kept thinking, 'Come on, we can get there,'" he said. Hamilton's determination to finish strong and honor his time with Mercedes was evident as he gave everything he had for the team.

Before performing celebratory 'donuts' in his car and posing for photos with his team members, Hamilton reflected on his deep connection to Mercedes, sharing his gratitude during radio exchanges.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Hamilton's performance, calling it the "drive of a world champion."

Hamilton reciprocated the praise, expressing his immense appreciation for the team's support over the years. "We dreamed alone, but together we believed, and as a team, we achieved things," he said, thanking everyone who contributed to his incredible journey with Mercedes.

Hamilton's 12-year tenure with Mercedes was marked by extraordinary achievements, including 84 race wins, 78 pole positions, and six world championships. He holds the record for most races with a single team, starting 246 Grands Prix for Mercedes.

In his final social media post as a Mercedes driver, Hamilton expressed his gratitude, saying, "It’s been real. I love you all." Team boss Wolff, alongside Hamilton’s engineer Pete Bonnington, also offered heartfelt messages, with Wolff stating, "We love you too, and you're always going to be part of the family."
