Haas Part Ways With Esteban Ocon as Rafael Camara Gets Formula 1 Debut in Brazil

Posted : 04 November 2026

Haas have confirmed that French driver Esteban Ocon will no longer compete for the American Formula One team during the remainder of the 2026 season, bringing an abrupt end to his campaign four races before the championship concludes.

The decision was announced on Tuesday, November 3, following tensions between Ocon and team management during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. The 30-year-old was unexpectedly replaced by Japanese reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa after participating in both Friday practice sessions.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu explained that the decision had been taken in the team's best interests, although he declined to reveal details of the discussions that led to the separation.

Komatsu acknowledged that such decisions were never straightforward but maintained that the team believed a change was necessary to move forward. He also described the conversations with Ocon as an internal matter that would remain private.

The situation followed reports of a disagreement between Ocon and Komatsu over tyre selection during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. Speculation about a physical confrontation also emerged, but the Frenchman strongly denied that any violence had taken place, while acknowledging differences of opinion with the team.

Ocon's departure comes after Haas had already confirmed that he would leave the team at the end of the 2026 season. The Frenchman joined the American outfit in 2025 and has competed in 198 Formula One Grands Prix throughout a career spanning approximately a decade.

His replacement for the 2027 campaign had already been announced, with Brazilian youngster Rafael Camara selected to partner British driver Oliver Bearman.

However, Haas have now brought forward Camara's promotion, giving the 21-year-old an opportunity to make his Formula One debut at his home São Paulo Grand Prix from November 6 to 8.

Camara currently leads the Formula 2 championship and is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. His impressive performances in junior categories and a previous test with Haas helped convince the team of his potential.

Komatsu welcomed the Brazilian's arrival, expressing confidence in his abilities ahead of his first appearance in Formula One machinery during a competitive race weekend.

Hirakawa, who replaced Ocon in Mexico and finished 10th to secure a championship point, will not be available for the Brazilian race because of his existing World Endurance Championship commitments with Toyota.

Following the São Paulo Grand Prix, the 2026 Formula One calendar will feature races in Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Haas have yet to confirm their driver arrangements for those remaining events.

Ocon's immediate future in Formula One is now uncertain as the Frenchman faces an unexpected early end to his 2026 campaign.
