GR Cup Heads Into Uncharted Territory as Redstar Raceway Resets Championship Battle

Posted : 14 April 2026

The GR Cup moves into its second round of the 2026 season at Redstar Raceway, a venue that introduces a completely fresh challenge for the media championship field. After an opening round that set early momentum, the series now shifts to Mpumalanga, where an unfamiliar clockwise layout is expected to significantly reset competitive expectations and strategy across the grid.

Redstar Raceway is a technical circuit featuring 13 corners and multiple straights, known for demanding precision and consistency from drivers. Although the track has been used in previous years, the GR Cup returns after a long absence, and none of the media competitors have raced the current configuration in their race cars. This effectively levels the playing field, placing emphasis on adaptability rather than prior experience.

Drivers and commentators alike have highlighted tyre management and consistency as key factors for success.

The circuit’s relatively low surface degradation allows for aggressive racing, but its technical layout means mistakes are costly and sustained rhythm is essential over the short sprint format. With eight-lap races planned, teams will be required to balance outright pace with strategic control.

The media championship battle is already heating up after a competitive opening round at Killarney. Several drivers, including Craig Nicholson and Taye Mbiri, showed strong early pace and will aim to convert consistency into podium finishes.

Justin Ford’s steady performance has also positioned him as a contender, while returning participants such as Kumbi Mtshakazi are expected to shake up the order.

Attention will also be on the new Toyota GR Corolla race package, which made its debut in Round 1. With limited pre-season testing, teams used the opening round primarily for data collection, but confidence in the machinery is now growing.

Drivers are expected to push the cars harder in Round 2 as understanding of the package improves.

With an unfamiliar circuit, closely matched drivers and increasing confidence in the new machinery, Round 2 at Redstar Raceway is expected to deliver tight racing and potentially decisive moments in the early championship battle.
