George Russell Holds Off Max Verstappen to Win Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Posted : 26 September 2026

George Russell secured his third Formula 1 victory of the 2026 season after holding off Max Verstappen in a dramatic finish to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. The Mercedes driver converted his pole position into victory, beating Verstappen by just 0.196 seconds after 51 laps.

Russell controlled the opening stages of the race as Verstappen worked his way forward from eighth on the grid. The Red Bull driver initially found himself behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri before eventually moving into second and becoming Russell’s main challenger.

The race changed dramatically when two Safety Car periods erased Russell’s advantage and brought Verstappen onto the Mercedes driver’s rear wing for the closing laps. Russell managed the pressure through the final 11-lap run to the chequered flag, despite concerns over energy deployment, and held on for a narrow victory.

Verstappen had to settle for second, while Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar completed the podium on his return to racing after missing three Grands Prix with a broken wrist. Hadjar’s result gave Red Bull a double podium in Baku.

Kimi Antonelli recovered impressively from 16th on the grid to finish fifth for Mercedes, behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The result reduced Antonelli’s championship advantage over Russell to 66 points after 15 rounds.

Russell described the victory as particularly satisfying after a difficult period and praised Mercedes for continuing to support him. The win was his eighth career Grand Prix victory and his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June.
