George Russell set the fastest time in the opening practice session of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, edging out McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by 0.203 seconds in a competitive start to the weekend.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished third, while reigning world champion Max Verstappen placed fourth for Red Bull after a closely matched session at the Spanish circuit.
The session featured a strong showing from junior and reserve drivers, as teams fulfilled their mandatory requirement to run emerging talent in at least two practice sessions per season. McLaren’s Leonardo Fornaroli impressed by setting the fifth-fastest time, while Estonian driver Paul Aron, competing in an Audi under Alpine reserve duties, also delivered a standout performance.
Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson finished seventh, split from teammate Arvid Lindblad by Ferrari junior Dino Beganovic, who was driving in place of Lewis Hamilton for the session. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto rounded out the top ten, ahead of Haas rookie Oliver Bearman and Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto.
The session ran largely without major disruptions, although a few drivers including Cadillac reserve Colton Herta, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, and Beganovic had minor moments over the kerbs at Turn Eight.
Ferrari also used the session to evaluate a significant aerodynamic upgrade package, including a revised floor design. The update is expected to be used by Hamilton during the second practice session later in the day.
Williams reserve driver Luke Browning was unable to complete any laps due to an electrical issue on Alex Albon’s car, limiting his participation in the session.
