George Russell Stays Calm as Kimi Antonelli Targets Fourth Straight Formula One Victory

Posted : 22 May 2026

George Russell insists there is no reason for concern ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, despite teammate Kimi Antonelli arriving in Montreal as the championship leader and chasing a fourth consecutive Formula One victory.

Russell heads into the weekend 20 points behind Antonelli in the standings but remains calm about the title race, stressing that the season is still in its early stages with many races remaining. The Mercedes driver said he is focused solely on performance rather than championship pressure.

Mercedes are introducing their first major car upgrade of the season at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after rivals McLaren and Ferrari unveiled developments earlier in the campaign. Russell said the team’s internal data appears encouraging, although the real impact of the updates will only become clear once the car hits the track.

The British driver identified race starts as Mercedes’ biggest weakness so far this season, acknowledging that improvements in that area may take time. Despite this, he believes the Canadian circuit could suit the characteristics of the Mercedes car better than some previous venues.

Russell also pointed to the team’s recent performances in Montreal, saying the flowing nature of the circuit has historically matched their package well. However, he cautioned that previous success does not automatically guarantee victory this year.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Antonelli continues to impress after an outstanding start to his rookie season. The Italian driver arrives in Canada seeking a fourth straight race win, a feat achieved by only a handful of current Formula One drivers including Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Antonelli admitted he did not expect to begin the season so strongly but said he is deliberately avoiding thinking too much about the championship standings. Instead, he plans to continue approaching each race individually while remaining aware of the opportunity ahead of him.
