George Russell Opens Up on Difficult 2026 F1 Season After Losing Title Battle to Kimi Antonelli

Posted : 03 November 2026

George Russell has admitted that watching his Formula One championship hopes disappear during the 2026 season was extremely difficult, revealing that he struggled to recover from a campaign filled with disappointing performances and bad luck.

The Mercedes driver shared an emotional message on social media on Monday, reflecting on a season that began with high expectations but ultimately ended with his younger teammate, Kimi Antonelli, becoming the sport's youngest world champion.

Russell entered the campaign as one of the leading favourites for the title after an encouraging start. However, his challenge gradually unravelled as Antonelli produced a series of impressive performances to establish a commanding advantage in the standings.

The 20-year-old Italian secured the championship at Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the youngest driver to win the Formula One world title and Italy's first champion since 1953.

Russell described 2026 as the first full season of his career in which difficult days had outweighed the positive moments. He acknowledged that repeatedly trying to regain his confidence and performance had been challenging, admitting that he often found himself confused by the problems he encountered.

The 28-year-old also congratulated Antonelli, praising his teammate's outstanding campaign and insisting that he deserved the championship. Despite the disappointment, Russell expressed appreciation for Mercedes and the team's efforts to return to the front of the sport.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff previously acknowledged that the team had let Russell down, with technical difficulties affecting his performance. In Mexico, Russell finished sixth after experiencing a power-related problem and receiving a 10-second penalty following an incident with Isack Hadjar.

His absence from the mandatory post-race media session resulted in Mercedes receiving a €5,000 fine after the team allowed him to leave the circuit.

Russell has now turned his attention towards rebuilding his form, promising to work hard for the remainder of the season and into 2027. He remains confident that he can rediscover the level of performance that has characterised much of his career, while hoping for better luck in the future.
