George Russell Faces Championship Disappointment as Kimi Antonelli Takes Historic F1 Crown

Posted : 02 November 2026

George Russell has been left to reflect on a disappointing Formula 1 campaign after Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli secured the 2026 drivers’ championship in Mexico City, ending the Briton's hopes of claiming his maiden world title.

Russell entered the season as one of the leading favourites after Mercedes impressed during pre-season testing. His strong start, which included victory at the Australian Grand Prix, appeared to put him in an ideal position to challenge for the championship. However, the campaign took an unexpected turn as Antonelli emerged as the team's leading contender.

The 28-year-old struggled to maintain his early momentum while his younger teammate consistently delivered strong results. Antonelli's impressive run included five consecutive victories, allowing the Italian to establish a significant advantage in the standings.

Russell's difficulties became particularly evident at the Monaco Grand Prix, where penalties pushed him from third to 12th place. His frustration was clear after the race, as he admitted he was finding it difficult to understand how his season had developed.

Mechanical problems and on-track incidents also contributed to his struggles. Retirements in Canada and Malaysia, alongside a collision involving Lewis Hamilton in Belgium, further disrupted his campaign. Although Russell produced impressive victories in Austria and Azerbaijan, he was unable to close the gap to Antonelli.

The Italian's performance at Monza provided another illustration of the growing difference between the Mercedes teammates. While Russell started near the front, Antonelli recovered from 19th on the grid to claim victory in front of his home supporters.

Russell subsequently acknowledged before the United States Grand Prix that he had not performed to the standard required to challenge for the championship. Nevertheless, he insisted that the setback would not define his career, pointing to the longevity of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso as examples of what remains possible in Formula 1.

The Mexican Grand Prix finally confirmed Antonelli's championship success. The 20-year-old finished third behind Max Verstappen and Hamilton, becoming the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history with four races remaining.

Russell, meanwhile, endured another difficult afternoon. Starting second, he lost several positions after an unexpected deployment problem affected his getaway. He later received a 10-second penalty following contact with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar and eventually finished sixth.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed after the race that Russell was deeply disappointed by the outcome and had been excused from his post-race media commitments. Wolff described the situation as extremely difficult for the British driver, while acknowledging that the team had failed to provide him with the performance needed to fight for victory in Mexico.

Despite the disappointment, Russell showed sportsmanship by congratulating Antonelli immediately after the race. His attention will now turn to the remaining rounds, where Mercedes still have the constructors' championship to pursue.

Russell believes he has plenty of time to achieve his ambitions, insisting that the difficult experience will make him stronger rather than damage his confidence.
