George Russell Ends Winless Run With Commanding Austrian Grand Prix Victory

George Russell returned to the top step of the podium with a composed drive to win the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, ending a run of disappointing results. The Mercedes driver crossed the finish line 1.611 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen after a strategic and demanding race at the Red Bull Ring.

The victory marked Russell's second triumph of the 2025 Formula One season and the seventh of his career. Having started from pole position, the British driver managed the challenging conditions and intense pressure throughout the race to secure an important result in the championship battle.

Verstappen, who began the race from fifth on the grid, fought his way through the field and finished second after holding off Mercedes teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian crossed the line just 0.375 seconds behind the reigning world champion to complete the podium.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri finished fourth, more than 20 seconds behind the leaders. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton came home in fifth after spending much of the afternoon involved in several close battles. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar finished sixth, while McLaren's Lando Norris took seventh. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc claimed eighth, with Red Bull drivers Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad rounding out the top 10.

Speaking after the race, Russell expressed his delight at returning to winning form after several frustrating weekends. He praised Verstappen and Red Bull for their pace and admitted he had to push throughout the race before finally sealing the victory.

The result also reduced Antonelli's lead in the drivers' championship. Russell cut the gap by 10 points, leaving the Mercedes youngster with a 40-point advantage after previously building a commanding lead through five consecutive victories earlier in the season.

Verstappen was satisfied with second place after recovering from fifth on the grid despite the extreme heat, with air temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius and track temperatures climbing to 62 degrees. He said tyre management played a crucial role after an entertaining opening stint.

Antonelli admitted he made mistakes during the opening laps after becoming overly eager, running wide twice before settling into a stronger rhythm. Although his pace improved after his first pit stop, he felt his recovery came too late to challenge for victory.

Russell made an excellent start from pole position to maintain the lead, while Hamilton overtook Leclerc for second. Antonelli's early errors briefly cost him positions, allowing Verstappen to move into contention as the opening laps unfolded.

The race soon developed into a tactical contest dominated by tyre management and pit-stop strategy. Both Cadillac cars retired early with overheating problems, while Verstappen steadily worked his way forward by overtaking Hamilton before the first round of pit stops.

Mercedes and Red Bull adopted different pit strategies as the lead changed hands several times during the race. Antonelli briefly led after Russell made his first stop, but another pit cycle later in the race handed the advantage back to Russell.

With just over 20 laps remaining, Russell regained the lead and successfully controlled the closing stages despite relentless pressure from Verstappen. The Mercedes driver managed his tyres effectively to take the chequered flag and celebrate a hard-earned victory in Austria.
