George Russell believes his contract extension with Mercedes gives him the best chance to fight for a Formula One world title.
George Russell has expressed strong confidence in his decision to extend his contract with Mercedes, saying the team remains his best chance of achieving Formula One championship success when the sport’s new engine era begins in 2026.
The 26-year-old Briton, who has already secured two victories this season, believes Mercedes’ engineering expertise and championship pedigree make them the team to beat when new regulations come into effect next year.
Speaking to reporters at the United States Grand Prix on Thursday — a day after Mercedes officially announced his contract extension — Russell said he was thrilled to continue with the team.
“I’m really happy to be continuing,” Russell said. “If every single seat on the grid was available for next year, I still believe Mercedes gives me the best chance of winning the championship.”
While contract details were not revealed, Russell emphasized that his decision was driven by ambition rather than financial incentives. “For me, it’s about winning, not money or sponsor days. I want to be in a position to fight for titles, and that’s what I’m focused on,” he added.
Mercedes have confirmed that Russell and teenage Italian driver Kimi Antonelli will form their lineup in 2026. The deal is understood to be a multi-year contract, likely containing performance-related clauses and exit options common in Formula One agreements.
When asked whether he had considered possible escape clauses if the team failed to compete for wins, Russell brushed off the idea. “Of course, it would be disappointing not to be fighting at the front, but that’s not something we’re thinking about right now,” he said.
The contract negotiations reportedly took time, with Mercedes also linked to Red Bull’s four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who could become available in 2027 if Red Bull fails to meet its performance targets.
Despite those rumours, Russell appeared unfazed, saying he would be happy to remain with Mercedes long-term and fully trusts the team’s direction.
“I’m comfortable here and believe in the people around me. If we keep improving, I see no reason to look elsewhere,” he concluded.
As Formula One prepares for a major technological shift in 2026, Russell’s commitment signals confidence in Mercedes’ long-term vision — and his own determination to turn that belief into a world championship.
