Two-time MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia will leave Ducati’s factory team at the end of the current season, the Italian manufacturer confirmed on Wednesday. The 29-year-old has been a central figure in Ducati’s modern success but is now expected to move on after several seasons with the team.
Bagnaia, who was promoted to Ducati’s factory squad in 2021, is widely reported to be set for a switch to Aprilia in 2027, where he could join compatriot and current championship leader Marco Bezzecchi. While Ducati has not officially confirmed his next destination, speculation about his future has been growing for months.
Ducati chief executive Claudio Domenicali paid tribute to Bagnaia, describing his contribution as a key part of the manufacturer’s recent sporting history. He highlighted the Italian rider’s development within the team and his role in returning Ducati’s Desmosedici bike to championship-winning form.
Bagnaia secured back-to-back MotoGP titles with Ducati in 2022 and 2023, ending the team’s long wait for a premier class crown. His 2022 triumph was particularly significant, marking Ducati’s first rider championship in 15 years.
However, the Italian’s form has declined since narrowly missing out on a third consecutive title in 2024, when he finished just 10 points behind champion Jorge Martin. Last season, he dropped to fifth in the standings, finishing well behind teammate Marc Marquez.
This year has also proved challenging for Bagnaia, who sits seventh in the riders’ championship with only one win to his name so far, coming in the Czech MotoGP sprint race.
Ducati recently confirmed that Marc Marquez will remain with the factory team for another two seasons, further shaping the team’s future direction as Bagnaia prepares for a new chapter in his career.
