Francesco Bagnaia Set for Aprilia Switch as Ducati Signs Pedro Acosta

Posted : 25 June 2026

Francesco Bagnaia will begin a new chapter in his MotoGP career after agreeing to join Aprilia once his time with Ducati comes to an end at the conclusion of the current season. The Italian manufacturer confirmed on Thursday that the two-time world champion has signed a four-year contract with its factory team.

The 29-year-old rider will team up with fellow Italian Marco Bezzecchi, who currently leads the MotoGP championship standings. Aprilia hopes the partnership can strengthen its challenge at the front of the grid in the coming seasons.

Ducati has already moved to secure Bagnaia’s successor, announcing that highly rated Pedro Acosta will step into the factory squad. The 22-year-old Spaniard, a former Moto3 and Moto2 world champion, is regarded as one of the sport’s brightest young talents and will line up alongside reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez.

Marquez recently committed his future to Ducati by extending his contract for an additional two years, giving the team a blend of experience and youth heading into the next era of competition.

Bagnaia joined Ducati’s factory operation in 2021 and quickly became one of the team's most successful riders. He delivered back-to-back MotoGP titles in 2022 and 2023, ending Ducati’s 15-year wait for a riders’ championship and cementing his place in the manufacturer's history.

The Italian narrowly missed out on a third consecutive world crown in 2024, finishing just 10 points behind champion Jorge Martin. However, his fortunes have declined since then, with difficulties adapting to the factory bike affecting his performances.

Last season, Bagnaia ended the campaign in fifth place, trailing teammate Marquez by a significant margin. His struggles have continued this year, leaving him seventh in the championship standings despite claiming victory in the Czech MotoGP sprint race earlier in the season.

The move to Aprilia offers Bagnaia an opportunity to revive his championship ambitions, while Ducati places its future hopes in Acosta as the next star to lead the factory team forward.
