Formula One teams discuss proposal to extend points scoring positions

Posted : 24 April 2024

Formula One teams are set to discuss a proposal to expand the points-scoring positions from the top 10 to include the 11th and 12th places starting next season. The matter is scheduled for discussion during the virtual F1 commission meeting, which involves both the governing FIA and the commercial rights holder. While six of the 10 teams need to vote in favor for the proposal to pass, larger teams have hinted that they may not oppose it.

Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull Racing, highlighted the competitive nature of the midfield teams, suggesting that those in positions 6-10 are just as fiercely competitive as those in the top five.

Horner emphasized the importance of analyzing the potential impact of the proposal, particularly in terms of its financial implications, before making a decision. The proposed change would adjust the points distribution, extending it to include positions 11th and 12th, with a new sequence of 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

The current scoring system, in place since 2010, only awards points to the top 10 finishers, creating a situation where some teams finish just outside the points without any reward. The proposed adjustment aims to address this issue and ensure that every team has the opportunity to score points in a race.

Team principals, including Ferrari's Fred Vasseur and Haas's Ayao Komatsu, have expressed support for the proposal, emphasizing the need for fairness and inclusivity in the points system. However, drivers' opinions vary, with some advocating for even more radical changes to make races more engaging for all competitors.
