Formula one pre-season testing plagued by loose drain covers in Bahrain

Posted : 23 February 2024

Formula One's pre-season testing faced another setback as loose drain covers disrupted the session for the second consecutive day at Bahrain's Sakhir circuit.

Repairs were swiftly undertaken at Turn 11 to rectify the issue, causing a suspension in the track action, with the usual lunch break omitted, and the session extended until 7 p.m. local time.

The interruptions stemmed from a loose drain cover incident on Thursday involving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Ferrari had to replace the floor of Leclerc's car due to the mishap.

On Friday, Red Bull's Sergio Perez encountered a similar problem, dislodging a different drain cover at the same turn, prompting another suspension, red flags, and subsequent repairs.

Before the interruptions, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz had set the pace, leading the timesheets. However, the latest suspension added to the challenges faced by teams and drivers in the limited pre-season testing, with each driver allocated only a day and a half.

Some have expressed concerns about the insufficient time to adapt to the complexities of the new cars. Despite the disruptions, the first race of the season is scheduled to take place at the Bahrain circuit on Saturday next week.
