Formula One May End 2026 Season in Europe if Qatar and Abu Dhabi Races Are Cancelled

Formula One could bring the curtain down on its 2026 season in Europe if the scheduled Grands Prix in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are called off because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

The sport has already adjusted its calendar this season after the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were cancelled following the outbreak of hostilities involving Israel, the United States and Iran. Bahrain's race has since been rescheduled and is now set to take place in Malaysia on October 4.

Speaking on Wednesday, Domenicali said Formula One would make a final decision on the Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled for November 29, and the Abu Dhabi season finale on December 6 by the middle of September. He stressed that both events remain on the calendar for now but acknowledged that safety and stability would determine whether they can proceed.

According to Domenicali, if conditions in the region do not improve by the decision deadline, Formula One is prepared to relocate the final part of the championship to Europe instead of staging the races in the Middle East.

Speculation has linked several alternative venues to a possible schedule change. Reports have suggested the Circuit of the Americas in Texas could host an additional race or that Las Vegas might stage back-to-back Grands Prix following its scheduled event on November 21.

However, Domenicali dismissed those possibilities, saying Formula One does not want to diminish the value of the Las Vegas Grand Prix by adding another event there. He also pointed out that the championship competes for attention in the United States during the NFL season, making additional American races less appealing.

While Domenicali declined to identify a preferred European replacement venue, Italy's Imola circuit has emerged as a leading candidate should the Middle East races ultimately be cancelled. Meanwhile, the World Endurance Championship has already shifted the conclusion of its season to Spain and Italy after dropping planned races i Qatar and Bahrain.
