Formula 1 to Reduce Grand Prix Race Distance to 290km From 2027

Formula 1 will shorten the standard Grand Prix distance from 305km to 290km from the 2027 season as part of changes linked to the sport’s revised power-unit regulations. The adjustment represents a reduction of roughly two or three laps, depending on the circuit.

The change was approved at the latest Formula 1 Commission meeting in London on September 21. It is connected to planned refinements to the 2027 power-unit rules concerning fuel flow, with the shorter distance intended to account for increased fuel usage. The changes still require approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

Formula 1 will also introduce a new system for races affected by rain, accidents or other interruptions. The existing three-hour limit covering the period from the start of a race to its finish, including stoppages, will be removed.

Instead, a “hard stop time” will determine when racing activity must end. The exact stopping time will vary depending on local circumstances, while the existing limit of two hours of actual racing will remain in place. The FIA said the changes are designed to give spectators a better opportunity to see a complete race when disruptions occur.

The new approach could provide additional flexibility for night races, where local sunset and circuit conditions can influence the available racing window. The aim is to manage disrupted events without being restricted by the current three-hour overall limit.

The F1 Commission has also agreed to give teams greater flexibility to extend free practice sessions when they are interrupted. Under the current regulations, the clock continues to run during red-flag stoppages in practice, unlike qualifying and races, where the session is suspended.

Another 2027 change will remove gearbox homologation following consultation with manufacturers and a recommendation from the Sporting Advisory Committee. According to the FIA, this will preserve development freedom for suppliers.
