Formula 1 Expands Sprint Calendar to 10 Races for 2027 Season

Formula 1 will increase the number of Sprint weekends from six to 10 in the 2027 World Championship, with five circuits hosting the format for the first time. The official calendar confirms that Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will join the Sprint schedule, while Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar will retain their places.

The 2027 season will feature 24 Grands Prix across five continents, beginning with Bahrain before the championship moves to Saudi Arabia. Australia will then host the third round, followed by Japan and China as part of the early-season schedule.

The Sprint format provides an additional competitive session during the race weekend, with a shorter race alongside the traditional Grand Prix programme. The expansion means fans will have 10 weekends featuring Sprint competition, up from the previous maximum of six.

Monaco will be among the new Sprint venues. The addition gives the historic street circuit an extra qualifying session and another competitive event, despite its well-known difficulties for overtaking.

The 2027 calendar will also see the return of Portugal and Türkiye. Portugal is scheduled to return at the Algarve circuit after last hosting a Formula 1 race in 2021, while Türkiye will return at Istanbul Park following its most recent appearances in 2020 and 2021.

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is scheduled for July 2-4 and will once again feature a Sprint. Canada, Italy, Brazil and Qatar are also set to host Sprint weekends alongside Great Britain.

Formula 1 has also confirmed that the 2027 championship will run across a 10-month period, with races arranged across five continents. The season is scheduled to conclude with a Middle Eastern double-header in Qatar and Abu Dhabi in December.

Pre-season testing is planned for Bahrain at the end of February. With the technical regulations continuing into 2027, Formula 1 says teams will have one four-day test at the Bahrain International Circuit ahead of the new campaign.

Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali welcomed the expanded Sprint programme and the return of Portugal and Türkiye, while FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem described the calendar as reflecting the championship's international reach and continued development.
