FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem cleared of allegations surrounding Las Vegas Grand Prix

Posted : 22 April 2024

Motorsport figurehead Mohammed Ben Sulayem has reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and adherence to regulations following his exoneration from allegations regarding the organization of the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The FIA president was cleared of purportedly influencing officials to find faults in the Las Vegas circuit ahead of its 2023 debut, as stated in an internal FIA report. Ben Sulayem, a former rally driver from the United Arab Emirates, also received clearance from the FIA ethics committee regarding accusations of meddling in the outcome of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix last year.

Speaking to media outlets at the Chinese Grand Prix, Ben Sulayem addressed the accusations, emphasizing his steadfast adherence to integrity and openness. He expressed his satisfaction with his accomplishments since assuming the FIA presidency in December 2021, while asserting his innocence and the lack of any concealment on his part.

While the motives behind Ben Sulayem's purported actions regarding the Las Vegas Grand Prix remain unclear, speculation has arisen regarding tensions between the FIA and Liberty Media, the American group owning Formula One's commercial rights and orchestrating the Las Vegas event.

Nonetheless, Ben Sulayem asserted a positive relationship with Formula One Management (FOM) and expressed his desire to maintain collaborative endeavors, firmly denying any wrongdoing and affirming his unwavering commitment to playing within the confines of the rules.
