FIA Drops Johnny Herbert as Grand Prix Steward Due to Conflict of Interest

Posted : 29 January 2025

Formula One's governing body, the FIA, announced on Wednesday that Johnny Herbert would no longer serve as a grand prix steward, citing a conflict between his media pundit role and steward duties. Herbert, a former F1 driver with three race wins, had been set to officiate at the Australian Grand Prix on March 16.

However, after discussions, it was determined that his ongoing work as a pundit, particularly his commentary for various media outlets, made it difficult to maintain the impartiality required for the steward role.

Herbert’s media comments last season, particularly regarding Max Verstappen’s on-track behavior, had drawn criticism, including from Verstappen and his father Jos. Despite this, Herbert remained active as a pundit across various platforms, continuing to voice his opinions on the sport.

The FIA's statement acknowledged Herbert’s extensive experience and the value he brought to his steward role but emphasized the incompatibility of his duties as a media figure and a race official.

The FIA clarified that the role of a steward is to ensure the consistent and fair application of race rules, with one steward typically being a former driver to represent the drivers’ perspective. While Herbert’s departure comes as a disappointment to some, the FIA thanked him for his service and expressed well wishes for his future endeavors in the motorsport world.
