Ferrari sets February 19 launch, avoids confirming Hamilton's debut

Posted : 19 December 2024

Ferrari has not yet confirmed the date for Lewis Hamilton's debut in the team's red overalls, but his 2025 car will be revealed on February 19 in Maranello, just a day after the unprecedented 10-team livery launch in London.

Ferrari fans are eager to see the seven-time world champion behind the wheel of a Ferrari for the first time since his switch from Mercedes. However, the excitement surrounding Hamilton must be managed carefully by the team.

Hamilton, who will turn 40 on January 7 and is replacing Spaniard Carlos Sainz, is expected to have his first run at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track. The team will use cars that are at least two years old, in line with regulations that allow limited car usage before the official test sessions.

Team principal Fred Vasseur spoke about the winter weather making planning challenging but expressed confidence in Hamilton’s ability to adapt quickly. “He's not a rookie,” Vasseur remarked, emphasizing that Hamilton’s wealth of experience would help him handle any challenges that arise during his initial days with the team.

Vasseur also mentioned that Ferrari has the advantage of using a simulator, which will allow Hamilton to prepare for race simulations, qualifying, and familiarize himself with the steering wheel and car’s specific features. Official testing will begin in Bahrain on February 26.

Regarding the introduction of Hamilton, Vasseur stated there would be no grand presentation as was the case when Michael Schumacher joined in the 1990s. "We must stay focused on the season ahead," he explained. He added that with the car launch and championship kickoff events already scheduled, there simply wouldn't be enough time for a special introduction.

In addition, Hamilton will need to adjust to a new race engineer, as his long-time collaborator Peter "Bono" Bonnington will remain at Mercedes. Vasseur has already decided who will be assigned to Hamilton but is keeping that information private. He emphasized that Ferrari will not copy Mercedes' approach but will instead create a distinct strategy with its own team resources.
