Ferrari avoided any sporting penalties for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc after Formula One stewards fined the team for breaching tyre regulations during Friday's practice sessions at the Belgian Grand Prix. Instead of issuing grid drops to the drivers, the FIA imposed a total fine of €10,000 after determining the infringement related to the team's handling of used tyres.
The investigation stemmed from an incident following the opening practice session at Spa-Francorchamps. Under Formula One sporting regulations, teams must return all used tyres to official supplier Pirelli both electronically and physically within a specified timeframe before the next session begins. Ferrari completed the electronic submission on time but failed to return the tyres physically before the deadline, prompting the stewards to review the matter.
After examining the circumstances, the stewards concluded that a financial penalty was sufficient, fining Ferrari €5,000 for each driver involved. The ruling meant Hamilton and Leclerc retained their starting positions without any grid sanctions heading into qualifying and Sunday's race.
On the track, Hamilton delivered an encouraging performance by finishing fourth in the second practice session after placing second in the opening session. The seven-time world champion, currently third in the drivers' standings, expressed optimism about Ferrari's pace despite acknowledging there was still room for improvement. Leclerc ended the afternoon session in 11th as the Italian team continued evaluating its setup for the remainder of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend.
While the tyre breach created an unexpected distraction for Ferrari, the team's primary focus now shifts to maximizing performance at Spa, relieved that both drivers remain free from any grid penalties ahead of the race.
