Fernando Alonso Commits to Aston Martin but Hints at Possible F1 Exit

Posted : 26 June 2026

Fernando Alonso has confirmed his commitment to Aston Martin despite ongoing speculation about his future, but the two-time world champion has left the door open to leaving Formula One altogether after the current season.

Speaking ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, the 44-year-old said he remains motivated and believes in Aston Martin’s long-term project under owner Lawrence Stroll. However, he made clear that his future decisions will be based on personal satisfaction and performance rather than external opinions.

Alonso addressed comments from within the team suggesting he remains highly valued, insisting he does not need reassurance about his pace. He stated that he feels competitive in the car and will decide his next move after the summer break, stressing that while he expects to keep racing, it may not necessarily be in Formula One.

The Spaniard admitted that enjoyment plays a key role in his career decisions and referenced his ongoing concerns about modern F1 regulations and hybrid power units. He explained that several factors will influence whether he continues in the sport or explores opportunities in other racing categories.

Aston Martin have endured a difficult season so far, scoring just one point in the opening seven races. Alonso acknowledged that the team has faced heavy criticism online, describing some of the reaction as excessive given their current struggles, but said such scrutiny is expected when results fall short.

Despite the disappointing performances, Alonso expressed confidence in the direction of the team. He highlighted the arrival of renowned designer Adrian Newey and the upcoming partnership with Honda as key pillars of Aston Martin’s future ambitions. He believes the organisation has the right structure in place to improve, even if progress has been slower than hoped.

He also emphasised that his commitment to the team extends beyond his driving career, underlining his belief in the project’s long-term vision. Alonso noted that while Aston Martin are currently at the back of the grid, he sees strong potential for growth with the right development steps.

Meanwhile, speculation about a possible move to Alpine appears unlikely to materialise. Alpine executive advisor Flavio Briatore indicated that the team is focused on its current drivers, particularly Pierre Gasly and rookie Franco Colapinto, who have both contributed to the team’s points this season.

Briatore praised Colapinto’s development and suggested that Alpine’s 2026 driver lineup will be decided later in the year, depending on performance.
