Fabio Di Giannantonio Wins Chaos-Interrupted Catalunya MotoGP as Alex Marquez Hospitalised

Posted : 18 May 2026

Fabio Di Giannantonio secured a dramatic victory at a heavily disrupted Catalunya MotoGP on Sunday, a race overshadowed by multiple crashes, red flags, and a serious injury to Alex Marquez.

The race was stopped twice after major incidents on track. The first red flag came when Pedro Acosta’s bike suffered a mechanical issue, leading to contact with Marquez and a violent crash that left his Gresini Ducati severely damaged. The Spaniard was later taken to hospital after sustaining fractures to a cervical vertebra and his right clavicle.

A second stoppage followed shortly after the restart when French rider Johann Zarco crashed at the opening corner, triggering another red flag and a revised restart with 12 laps remaining.

Di Giannantonio himself was caught up in the chaos of the opening crash and suffered a hand injury after being struck by debris from Marquez’s bike, but he was able to continue and remain competitive.

Once racing resumed, pole-sitter Pedro Acosta initially controlled the pace, leading the field for much of the restarted race. However, the final laps produced more dramatic changes as Di Giannantonio surged forward to take control with just two laps remaining.

Acosta’s challenge ended abruptly after contact with Ai Ogura, while penalties and further incidents reshaped the final classification. Zarco was later penalised, and several riders were demoted due to technical infringements, including tyre pressure violations.

As a result of post-race adjustments, Di Giannantonio was confirmed as the winner, marking his first MotoGP victory in three years. Fermin Aldeguer was promoted to second, while Francesco Bagnaia completed the revised podium.

The race also had implications for the championship standings, with overall leader Marco Bezzecchi extending his advantage despite a difficult weekend and a crash involving rival Jorge Martin.

Speaking after his victory, Di Giannantonio expressed relief and concern for the injured riders, describing the day as extremely difficult for everyone involved. He also reflected on the risks of the sport, noting the physical danger riders face in high-speed competition.

Alex Marquez’s team confirmed he would undergo surgery following his injuries, while Zarco was also taken to hospital for precautionary checks after complaints of pain in his leg and knee.
