F1 Dutch Grand Prix 2026: Zandvoort Set for Final Formula 1 Showdown

Formula 1 heads to the Netherlands next week for the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, with Zandvoort preparing to host its final F1 race after the circuit's contract expires at the end of the season. The event takes place from 21-23 August and will also feature the Dutch Grand Prix's first-ever Sprint weekend.

The Dutch round is the 12th race of the 2026 championship and comes immediately after the Hungarian Grand Prix. The visit to Zandvoort will begin the second half of the European portion of the calendar before Formula 1 moves to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix in September.

A packed Sprint weekend

The weekend will follow the shorter Sprint format. Friday will feature first practice followed by Sprint Qualifying, while Saturday will see the Sprint before the main qualifying session for Sunday's Grand Prix.

The 24-lap Sprint is scheduled for Saturday at 12:00 local time, with qualifying for the Grand Prix taking place at 16:00. The main race will then begin at 15:00 local time on Sunday, 23 August, with drivers completing 72 laps around the 4.259km circuit.

Zandvoort's final F1 appearance

The 2026 event carries additional significance because it will be the final Dutch Grand Prix under the current agreement. Formula 1 and the race promoter confirmed in 2024 that Zandvoort would remain on the calendar for one additional season before the event leaves the schedule.

Since returning to the F1 calendar in 2021 after a 36-year absence, Zandvoort has quickly become one of the championship's most distinctive venues. Its combination of fast, flowing sections, elevation changes and heavily banked corners has produced a demanding challenge for drivers.

The circuit's famous Tarzan corner features an 18-degree banking angle, while the Hugenholtzbocht and final Arie Luyendijkbocht also provide significant banking. These characteristics make Zandvoort a very different challenge from many conventional modern circuits.

Verstappen faces one last home challenge

The Dutch Grand Prix has traditionally been dominated by home favourite Max Verstappen, who won the first three editions following F1's return to Zandvoort. However, the 2025 race showed that victory is no longer guaranteed, with Oscar Piastri taking the chequered flag ahead of Verstappen.

Verstappen will therefore be looking to end the Dutch event's F1 era with another home victory, but he faces strong competition as the championship battle continues to develop.

The 2026 Dutch GP should also attract one of the biggest crowds of the European season. The combination of the Orange Army, a Sprint format and the circuit's final appearance on the F1 calendar gives the weekend an added sense of occasion.

With the championship heading into a crucial stage, Zandvoort could provide another important twist in the title battle — and one final opportunity for fans to experience Formula 1 racing among the Dutch dunes.
