F1 Drivers Welcome Safety Tweaks But Demand Further Changes for Better Racing in Miami

Posted : 01 May 2026

Formula 1 drivers have cautiously welcomed recent rule adjustments introduced ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, acknowledging that the changes improve safety but fall short of enhancing the overall quality of racing. The updates focus on modifying energy recovery and reducing extreme power shifts caused by battery usage in the sport’s hybrid era.

Most drivers agreed that the revisions are a step in the right direction, particularly in improving safety and reducing unpredictable speed differences between cars. However, there remains a widespread belief that the current regulations still limit the natural flow of racing and fail to fully deliver an exciting spectacle.

Max Verstappen noted that while discussions with Formula 1 and the FIA have been constructive, he believes drivers should have more influence in shaping the future of the sport. He also suggested that ongoing changes may not be enough to address deeper concerns about Formula 1’s identity in its hybrid era.

Verstappen, who has previously criticised the direction of the regulations, reiterated his concerns that the sport risks losing its traditional emphasis on raw speed and driver skill. Despite his criticism, he acknowledged that officials have made efforts to respond to driver feedback.

Lance Stroll was more critical, describing the current generation of cars as fundamentally flawed and less enjoyable compared to junior racing categories. His comments reflected frustration among some drivers about the complexity of the hybrid systems.

Others, including Nico Hülkenberg and Oscar Piastri, took a more balanced view. Hülkenberg said he is curious to see how the changes perform on track, while Piastri praised the collaboration between drivers and governing bodies but suggested that deeper technical changes may still be required.

Piastri also referenced recent safety concerns following crashes earlier in the season, saying the tweaks were necessary and well-considered from a safety standpoint. However, he stressed that further evaluation would be needed once racing begins in Miami.

Despite differing opinions, there is broad agreement among drivers that while the latest adjustments are positive, Formula 1 still faces challenges in balancing safety, sustainability, and the excitement that defines elite motorsport.
