F1 Chief Domenicali Urges Respect Amid Verstappen Criticism as Hybrid Engine Rules Face Review

Posted : 16 April 2026

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has urged drivers to show greater respect for the sport while acknowledging that adjustments are needed to the newly introduced power unit regulations. His comments come amid growing criticism from several drivers, most notably four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

Verstappen has been outspoken about the current hybrid engine rules, which place a greater emphasis on electric power management. The Dutch driver has struggled with aspects of the system during the opening races of the season and has publicly described the new racing format as “a joke” following the Chinese Grand Prix. He has also suggested he could step away from Formula 1 in 2027 if the situation does not improve.

Domenicali, speaking to Autosport, said he has held repeated discussions with Verstappen and believes the driver understands the broader direction of the sport. While recognising Verstappen’s influence as one of F1’s leading figures, he stressed that such voices must be used responsibly to avoid misinterpretation or unnecessary conflict.

The F1 chief also called on all drivers to value the platform the sport provides, describing Formula 1 as a “jewel” that has played a major role in their personal and professional success. He emphasised the importance of maintaining respect for the sport’s legacy while continuing to evolve it for future audiences.

Behind the scenes, discussions between the FIA, teams, and drivers are ongoing to address concerns surrounding the current regulations. Meetings are scheduled ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, with potential adjustments expected to be announced soon.

Domenicali said upcoming changes aim to improve race conditions by allowing drivers to operate closer to full performance levels during braking and acceleration, while also addressing safety concerns raised in recent events.

The latest generation of hybrid power units, introduced to improve racing spectacle and encourage overtaking, combines equal parts internal combustion and electric power. While Domenicali praised the increased on-track action, he acknowledged that the system still requires refinement.

Concerns over safety and performance differences were highlighted after a high-speed incident at Suzuka involving Haas driver Oliver Bearman and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, reigniting debate over energy management complexity and speed disparities between cars.

Domenicali concluded that while the direction of Formula 1 is positive, the regulations must continue to evolve. The season is set to resume in Miami on May 3 following recent disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
