F1 Adds Extra Practice Time for Miami GP After Calendar Disruptions

Posted : 24 April 2026

Formula One drivers will be given additional track time at next week’s Miami Grand Prix following recent disruptions to the racing calendar and adjustments to technical regulations. The FIA confirmed the change on Thursday, extending Friday’s practice session to help teams adapt ahead of the race weekend.

The Miami Grand Prix, scheduled for May 3 and serving as the fourth round of the season, marks the return of racing after a month-long break. The pause followed the cancellation of races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia due to regional conflict, leaving teams without competitive action since the previous event.

During the break, the FIA also introduced rule adjustments aimed at improving driver safety and addressing concerns raised in the opening rounds of the season. These changes, combined with the extended gap between races, contributed to the decision to increase preparation time.

In Miami, the usual one-hour practice session will now run for 90 minutes, taking place from 12:00 to 13:30 local time. The FIA said the decision was made after discussions with teams and stakeholders, especially considering the sprint-format weekend, which limits practice opportunities.

The Miami event will feature a single practice session before sprint qualifying on Friday, followed by a 100km sprint race on Saturday and the main qualifying session for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

So far this season, Mercedes have dominated with three wins from three races, while young Italian driver Kimi Antonelli currently leads the championship standings.
