Formula One concluded its 2025 season in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday with champion Lando Norris taking to the track in his McLaren for a final tyre test before the sport undergoes significant changes next year. Norris, who secured the title in Sunday’s season-ending race at Yas Marina, was among 15 regular drivers joined by a selection of young talents eager to gain experience.
“It was great to get back out in our championship-winning car for one last time this year,” said Norris. “Now it's time for a rest before we go again.” Full pre-season testing is scheduled for January 26-30, ahead of the 2026 season opener in Australia on March 8.
Rising French driver Isack Hadjar, who will partner four-time world champion Max Verstappen next season, used the session to familiarize himself with Red Bull’s machinery. “They welcomed me really well, and I already feel comfortable with this group. It was good to get a feel for the tyres, even if this car is different from what I’ll be driving in Barcelona,” he said.
Arvid Lindblad, moving up from F2 to take Hadjar’s place at Racing Bulls, also gained valuable track time. “There are several things we need to get up to speed with together, including procedures we’ve been practicing, but overall it was a productive day,” he added.
The test featured Pirelli’s slightly narrower 2026 tyres mounted on ‘mule’ cars, still equipped with the current DRS system ahead of next year’s switch to active aerodynamics. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli completed the most laps (157) and set the fastest time at 1:25.170, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finishing second and third respectively, all using the softest C5 compound tyre.
This session also served as a farewell to the current generation of turbo-hybrid power units and ground effect cars, as well as the final outing for the Sauber team, which will return as Audi in 2026. The Abu Dhabi test marked the end of an era while setting the stage for a new chapter in Formula One.
