European Commission Approves Liberty Media’s Acquisition of MotoGP

Posted : 24 June 2025

Liberty Media, the American conglomerate behind Formula One, has received unconditional approval from the European Commission to acquire a controlling stake in MotoGP. The green light from the Commission clears the final regulatory hurdle for Liberty to proceed with its €4.3 billion purchase of the motorcycle grand prix series from Dorna Sports, a Spanish-based company that has managed the sport for decades. The deal is expected to close by July 3, 2025, marking the beginning of a transformative era for MotoGP.

Under the agreement, Liberty Media will acquire 84% of MotoGP, while Dorna will retain a 16% stake. The European Commission had launched an antitrust investigation to assess whether the merger would negatively impact competition, particularly in the licensing of sports broadcasting rights.

However, it concluded that Liberty and Dorna were not significant rivals in the affected markets and that the deal posed no substantial threat to competition. Concerns about potential influence from Liberty Global, which shares a major shareholder with Liberty Media, were also dismissed due to lack of evidence.

Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang expressed excitement over the Commission's decision, describing MotoGP as a "premium sports asset" with strong potential for global expansion. He highlighted the sport’s loyal fan base, dynamic racing product, and reliable financial returns as key assets. The company aims to replicate its successful Formula One growth model—particularly in attracting younger audiences and expanding viewership in the U.S.—to elevate MotoGP to new heights.

MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, who will continue to lead the series alongside his existing team, echoed Chang’s optimism. He described Liberty as the ideal partner to drive the sport forward, emphasizing plans to create more value for fans, sponsors, and competitors.

Since taking control of F1 in 2017, Liberty Media has prioritized spectacle and accessibility, helping transform Formula One into a global entertainment brand. With this acquisition, MotoGP appears poised for a similar evolution on the world stage.
