E1 Series: The Electric Revolution Making Waves in Marine Motorsport

Posted : 29 April 2025

The E1 Series has launched as the world’s first all-electric raceboat championship, blending high-speed marine competition with cutting-edge sustainable technology. Debuting in 2024, the series aims to revolutionize water-based motorsports while promoting environmental responsibility.

RaceBird: The Electric Hydrofoil Powerboat

At the heart of the E1 Series is the RaceBird, a pioneering electric hydrofoil powerboat. Designed by Sophi Horne of SeaBird Technologies, the RaceBird utilizes hydrofoil technology to lift above the water's surface, reducing drag and increasing energy efficiency. The boat is powered by a 150kW electric motor developed by Mercury Racing and features an immersion-cooled battery system from Kreisel Electric. With a top speed of approximately 93 km/h (58 mph), the RaceBird offers a thrilling yet environmentally friendly racing experience.

Sustainable Racing Infrastructure

To support the electric racing ecosystem, E1 has partnered with QiOn, a leader in high-power EV charging solutions. QiOn provides the "QUBE," a portable, weather-resistant DC charger designed to meet the rigorous demands of race environments. This collaboration ensures rapid and reliable charging across diverse global race locations, underscoring E1's commitment to sustainability.

Global Reach and Celebrity Involvement

The E1 Series has attracted a host of celebrity team owners, including Tom Brady, Will Smith, Rafael Nadal, Marc Anthony, LeBron James, and Virat Kohli. These high-profile figures bring attention and investment to the sport, helping to expand its global footprint. Races are held in iconic coastal cities such as Jeddah, Venice, Monaco, and Miami, with plans to include up to fifteen locations as the series grows.

Race Format and Competition

Each E1 race weekend features a two-day format: the first day includes testing, free practice, and qualifying sessions, while the second day hosts the semi-finals, play-off races, eliminator races, and finals. Teams consist of one male and one female pilot, who alternate driving duties throughout the event. Races are conducted on tight, technical circuits close to shore, enhancing spectator engagement and minimizing environmental impact.

The E1 Series represents a significant step forward in combining competitive sports with sustainable technology, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious motorsports.
