Ducati Admits Aprilia Is New MotoGP Benchmark After Third Consecutive Defeat in 2026 Season

Posted : 05 April 2026

The hierarchy of MotoGP has undergone a dramatic shift at the start of the 2026 season. Following Marco Bezzecchi’s commanding win for Aprilia at the Circuit of the Americas, Ducati management has officially admitted they are no longer the category's benchmark. The Noale-based factory has now secured three consecutive Grand Prix victories, leaving the defending champions in an uncharacteristic position of playing catch-up.

Data analysis from the opening rounds highlights a significant performance gap between the two Italian manufacturers. Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi revealed that Aprilia has found between seven and eight-tenths of a second in pace compared to last year. In contrast, the Desmosedici has only improved by approximately 0.1 to 0.2 seconds. This technical leap has allowed Aprilia riders Ai Ogura and Bezzecchi to dictate the terms of the early championship battle.

The standings reflect this new reality, with Aprilia holding a 32-point lead in the constructors' championship. Ducati currently finds itself fending off KTM for second place while sitting a distant fourth in the teams' standings. Fabio di Giannantonio remains the highest-placed Ducati rider, yet he trails the Aprilia duo of Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin, as well as KTM’s rookie sensation Pedro Acosta.

Ducati’s campaign has been further complicated by the physical condition of its star lineup. Marc Marquez is still struggling to reach 100% fitness following injuries sustained in Indonesia, while Fermin Aldeguer has already missed track time due to a training accident. Despite these setbacks, Tardozzi insists that "nothing is lost" with 19 races still remaining on the 2026 calendar.

The team is now looking toward the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez for a potential technical response. Engineering lead Gigi Dall’Igna is reportedly spearheading an urgent development push to close the gap. Management has stressed the need to better understand the specific requirements of their riders to unlock the bike's remaining potential and reverse the current trend.

While the "Bronze Bomber" of the paddock, Marc Marquez, showed flashes of his former speed in Austin by gaining time on the leaders mid-race, his fifth-place finish underscored the work ahead. Ducati remains hopeful that as Marquez and Aldeguer return to full health, the manufacturer can reassert its dominance. For now, the paddock eyes Jerez as the critical junction for Ducati's title defense.
