Christian Horner, the Red Bull team principal, acknowledged that Formula One leaders McLaren are bound to face more scrutiny due to their dominance in the sport. McLaren’s impressive performance this season has seen them win five out of six races, with a commanding one-two finish at the Miami Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri led teammate Lando Norris, while George Russell’s Mercedes finished over 30 seconds behind in third place. As a result of their dominant performance, many questions have arisen about McLaren’s ability to manage tire temperatures better than the competition, sparking discussions across the paddock.
Last season, unsubstantiated rumors circulated regarding McLaren’s possible use of water in their rear tires to cool them, although no formal protest was made. In a pointed response, McLaren team boss Zak Brown mockingly sipped from a bottle with “tire water” labels during a press conference. He also challenged anyone suspecting his team of rule violations to file a formal protest.
Horner, while acknowledging McLaren’s dominance, emphasized that he wasn’t implying any illegality but noted that in Formula One, when teams perform at the top level, they inevitably come under greater scrutiny.
McLaren’s current lead in the standings is undeniable, as they have already accumulated 105 points, a significant advantage over second-placed Mercedes. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff praised McLaren for their ability to maintain fast lap times without overheating their tires, noting that this was an area Mercedes needed to improve.
Wolff stressed that McLaren's success was down to excellent development and tire management rather than anything untoward, acknowledging the team's ability to adapt to the challenges better than others.
Wolff also emphasized that Mercedes was actively focusing on their own development to challenge McLaren. He expressed confidence that Mercedes was on the right track in understanding the key factors behind McLaren’s performance and was committed to experimenting and improving their own cars.
Despite the pressure from McLaren’s dominance, Wolff assured that Mercedes would continue to push forward and work toward narrowing the gap to McLaren in the upcoming races.
