Carlos Sainz Sr Bows Out of FIA Presidency Race, Paving Way for Ben Sulayem Re-election

Posted : 26 June 2025

Two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr has announced his decision not to pursue the presidency of the International Motoring Federation (FIA), effectively clearing the path for incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem's re-election. Sainz's withdrawal comes after a period of consideration and leaves Ben Sulayem without an apparent challenger for the upcoming December election.

Carlos Sainz Sr, a two-time world rally champion and father of Formula One driver Carlos Sainz Jr, confirmed on Wednesday that he will not be seeking the presidency of the International Motoring Federation (FIA). This decision significantly streamlines the path for Mohammed Ben Sulayem's re-election to the sport's highest governing body. Just last month, Sainz, 63, had indicated his interest in potentially running for the esteemed position.

In a message shared on social media, Sainz explained his reasoning: "I have finally decided not to run for the presidency of the FIA in this year's election." He elaborated on the extensive work he undertook to reach this conclusion, stating, "I have worked hard these past months to understand in depth the situation at the FIA and the demands and complexities that come with such an important project." After careful consideration, the four-time Dakar Rally winner concluded that "the present circumstances are not ideal to set the grounds for my candidacy." Sainz also cited his desire to avoid any interference with his preparations for the upcoming Dakar Rally next year as a factor in his decision.

With Sainz's withdrawal, the current FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, presently faces no official opposition for the December 12 election. Ben Sulayem's tenure, however, has not been without its challenges, marked by the resignations of several key senior staff members within the FIA and his controversial initiatives, such as the proposed ban on swearing by Formula One drivers.
