Carlos Sainz has been appointed as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), taking over the position previously held by retired four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel. The 30-year-old Spaniard, who recently moved to Williams after vacating his Ferrari seat for Lewis Hamilton, joins Mercedes driver George Russell on the board.
Sainz, who has secured four Formula One race victories over a decade-long career, expressed his enthusiasm for contributing to the sport’s development.
In a statement shared by the GPDA, Sainz emphasized the responsibility of drivers to collaborate with stakeholders in advancing the sport. He expressed pride in assuming the directors' role and reaffirmed his commitment to making a positive impact on Formula One.
The GPDA, which represents drivers' interests in discussions with governing bodies and teams, plays a key role in safety and regulatory matters.
Alongside Sainz and Russell, the GPDA board also includes legal consultant Anastasia Fowle and former F1 driver Alex Wurz, who serves as chairman. Wurz welcomed Sainz to the leadership team, acknowledging his active involvement in the GPDA over the years.
He praised Sainz's willingness to take on a vital role in advocating for drivers' interests and ensuring the continued progress of the sport.
