Carlos Sainz has ended speculation over his Formula 1 future by signing a new multi-year contract with Williams, keeping him at the team beyond the 2026 season.
The 31-year-old Spaniard joined Williams in 2025 after leaving Ferrari and enjoyed a strong first campaign with the Grove-based outfit, collecting two Grand Prix podiums as the team finished fifth in the constructors' championship. However, his second season has been far more difficult, with Williams currently struggling for competitiveness.
Sainz's renewal was announced just one day after Williams confirmed that Alex Albon would remain with the team for the 2027 season. The two drivers will therefore continue as teammates, giving Williams continuity as it attempts to recover from its disappointing 2026 campaign.
Despite the team's struggles and speculation that Sainz could seek another opportunity, the four-time Grand Prix winner has chosen to remain committed to Williams. He said he believes strongly in the people at the team and in the investment and work being carried out behind the scenes.
Sainz has endured a particularly challenging run of results this season and has failed to score in the last six rounds. Williams currently sits ninth in the constructors' standings, while Sainz and Albon occupy 15th and 16th respectively in the drivers' championship.
Williams team principal James Vowles welcomed the agreement, describing Sainz as a leader whose contribution extends beyond his performances on track. Vowles said the Spaniard shares the team's ambition and is helping drive its rebuilding project.
With both Sainz and Albon now secured, Williams has completed its 2027 driver line-up. The team will next look to improve its fortunes at this weekend's Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort as the second half of the 2026 season gets underway.
