Canada Extends F1 Contract to 2035 as Thailand Advances Grand Prix Bid

Posted : 17 June 2025

Canada has secured its long-term place on the Formula 1 calendar with a new agreement ensuring the Montreal Grand Prix will continue until at least 2035. The deal, signed with the governments of Canada and Quebec, extends the previous contract by four years.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, which first hosted an F1 race in 1978, faced scrutiny last year over organizational issues, but improvements in traffic and logistics during this year’s event reassured Formula 1 leadership, paving the way for the extension.

At the same time, Thailand is edging closer to joining the Formula 1 circuit, as the country's cabinet has approved funding to support a bid for a street race in Bangkok. The proposed race, scheduled to run from 2028 to 2032, would take place on a 3.54-mile track planned around Chatuchak Park, northeast of Bangkok’s city center. Thai officials estimate the project will cost 40 billion baht (approximately £907 million), viewing the event as a strategic boost for the country’s vital tourism sector.

Thai government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub expressed enthusiasm for the potential F1 debut, stating the race would mark a historic milestone for the country. Discussions between Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra earlier this year have already laid the groundwork for the bid. With cabinet approval now secured, the next step will be negotiating a formal contract with Formula 1 to secure the race.

For Canada, the future looks secure as Octane Racing Group—the race promoter—continues to invest in modernizing infrastructure to meet F1’s global standards. The series also confirmed a calendar shift for the Montreal race starting next year, moving it to late May to pair with the Miami Grand Prix.

This scheduling adjustment supports Formula 1’s sustainability goals by reducing transatlantic travel and emissions. The Montreal event remains a critical North American fixture as the sport expands its global footprint.
