Bezzecchi Triumphs at Mugello to Extend MotoGP Championship Lead

Posted : 01 June 2026

Marco Bezzecchi delivered a memorable performance at the Italian MotoGP on Sunday, claiming victory at Mugello and strengthening his position at the top of the championship standings. The Aprilia rider converted his pole position into a dominant win, earning his fourth Grand Prix triumph of the season and increasing his lead in the title race.

The Italian rider faced strong competition from compatriot Francesco Bagnaia during the early stages of the race. Bagnaia, who started from sixth on the grid, surged into the lead on the third lap. However, Bezzecchi remained close behind and launched a decisive move on lap 14 to reclaim first place. Once in front, he steadily pulled away from the field and crossed the finish line more than three seconds ahead of teammate Jorge Martin.

Martin secured second place after overtaking Bagnaia in the closing stages. The Spaniard remains Bezzecchi’s nearest rival in the championship battle, but now trails by 17 points after seven rounds of the season. Bagnaia completed the podium in third after successfully defending against late pressure from Japan’s Ai Ogura.

The victory carried special significance for Bezzecchi, who celebrated a dream result on home soil. The 27-year-old described winning at Mugello as a lifelong ambition, making the success even more meaningful in front of Italian fans.

Aprilia’s strong weekend was further highlighted by Martin’s record-breaking speed during Saturday’s sprint race. The Spanish rider set a new Mugello speed benchmark of 368.6 km/h (229 mph), underlining the competitiveness of the team throughout the event.

Meanwhile, Marc Marquez made his long-awaited return to racing after recovering from injuries sustained in a major crash at the French MotoGP earlier this month. The former world champion had undergone shoulder surgery and also suffered a broken foot, forcing him to miss the main race at Le Mans and the following race weekend in Barcelona.

Marquez showed promising pace during his comeback and briefly looked capable of challenging for a podium position. However, his performance faded in the latter stages of the race, and he eventually lost ground in a battle with Pedro Acosta before taking the chequered flag in seventh place.

With another commanding victory, Bezzecchi has strengthened his credentials as a serious contender for a maiden MotoGP world championship, while Aprilia continues to establish itself as a major force in the 2026 season.
